New Products and More!

Greetings fellow pet lovers,

Talk about a depressing last 2 weeks ...
Rodger last week and now Elisabeth. Oh well, Go Tina!

NEW PRODUCT ALERT!

Frontline Plus for dogs is now in stock. This is just like the old Frontline except it kills the flea eggs and flea larvae in addition to adult fleas and ticks. This is a great product and as usual is waterproof. If you have not started your pet on flea and tick control, now is the time. Lyme disease and Rocky mountain spotted fever are dangerous threats to us as well as our pets.

The real stink on ANAL GLANDS.......

All pets have 2 glands on each side of the anus that secrete a foul smelling substance used to mark their territory. Every pet has a unique anal gland odor that is identifiable by other pets (hence their keen interest in each others backsides). Some researchers have likened the anal glands to a pets business or calling card. This substance normally is secreted during a bowel movement. Problems occur when the glands become blocked, causing itching and pain. Many pets lick themselves under the tail and scoot on the ground to try to relieve the discomfort. Contrary to popular belief, pets do not develop hemorrhoids. Fortunately anal glands can be routinely expressed in almost all cases. In chronic cases of anal gland disease we can infuse the glands with a drug called DMSO that may decrease or permanently eliminate the glandular secretions.

Can my pet get MAD COW DISEASE?

Recently many folks have been asking us about this popular media topic. The most popular question is "can my pet get Mad Cow disease from chewing rawhide or pig ears?". The answer fortunately is no, but there have been several instances of pets contracting Salmonella bacteria from chewing on pig ears. Salmonella causes food poisoning type symptoms.....vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. We never recommend pig ears or similar products.

Rawhide can be safe if it is the proper type. The basted bones are fine for pets but always go for the larger sizes. Never give the stick form of rawhide because it can become lodged in the throat, stomach, or intestines which can lead to surgical removal. I prefer the flat CET chews that have glucose peroxidase enzymes which clean the teeth mechanically and enzymatically as your pet chews. Let us know if you would like a free sample.

KITTY CAFE

Cheryl Holloway, a veterinary technician, has developed a feeding box, the "Kitty Cafe", which permits only specific body shapes to enter to eat thus solving the problem of separate diets in multi cat households. For example, many people have 1 cat that is overweight and needs R/D while their other cat is thin and requires more calories. Neat concept.

PARALYZED DOGS WALK AGAIN

An implantable oscillating field stimulator device that enabled spinal cord regrowth in dogs, allowing some to walk again, will soon be tested on humans. The device bathes injured nerve cells with reversing, weak electrical fields. Debbie Bonnert, senior research supervisor at the Purdue Center for Paralysis Research in West Lafayette, Indiana, said: "We found years ago that nerve cells will grow towards a negative pole, and so the field reverses every 15 minutes to encourage growth on both sides of the injury. Nerve function in about 85 of the 100 canines improved.

PETS SOLD FOR THEIR FUR!

To decrease the market for cat and dog fur, the US Senate unanimously approved legislation to ban the sale, import, and export of cat and dog fur products in the United States. More than 2 million dogs and cats die each year to support the trade.

LUNG CANCER AND PETS

The American Journal of Epidemiology recently reported that short and medium nosed dogs owned by smokers have a 50 percent greater risk of developing lung cancer.

CATS AND FRESH STEP

There are reports of cats possibly injured or killed while playing with toy mice distributed in packages of Fresh Step cat litter. The company warned pet owners that the 450,000 blue felt toy mice attached to wires could strangle or cut kittens and cats. Pet owners should discard the toy or mail it back to the company in exchange for a coupon for a 14-pound box of Fresh Step litter.
